Team Defiant
Defiant by Name, Determined by Nature

Terry McLaughlin - Owner, Driver

Terry was an 1984 Olympic Silver Medallist and 1980 World Champion in the Flying Dutchman Class. He was the skipper of Canada I in the 1983 America's Cup Louis Vuitton series. He has won Canada's Premiere Match Racing Regatta, the York Cup, an incredible six times. Terry was the skipper and driving force behind the successful 2001 R.C.Y.C. Canada's Cup Challenge bringing the Canada's Cup back to Canada.He is an R.C.Y.C. Junior Club graduate and two time Intercollegiate All-American. Terry grew up on the Toronto Islands. He lives in Toronto with his wife Mickey and three sons. He is an RCYC member and a Category 1 amateur.

Andy Horton - Tactician

Andy was the 4th ranked match racer in North America in 2001. He grew up in Lake Champlain and was a three time All-American. He won a gold medal at the Pan American Games and was a training partner for the 2000 US Olympic Sailing Team. Andy was part of Team Defiant's 2001 successful Canada's Cup Challenge. He also won the York Cup in 2001. Last summer he diversified by going offshore and winning the Newport - Bermuda race and the Northern Ocean Racing Conference Trophy. Andy is a Category 3 professional and has been calling tactics for Ed Baird on the Professional Match Racing Tour for the last year.

Dave Scott - Main

Dave is a veteran of three Americas Cup campaigns. He has been a mainsheet man for the Swiss and Sail Coordinator for the Spanish. He was the mainsheet trimmer for Defiant in the 2001 Trials. For the 2002/2003 America's Cup he was with the British Team. He has been to three Farr 40 World Championships with impressive 2nd, 3rd & 3rd finishes. Dave was also a watch captain on a Volvo Round the World race. Dave was born in England and now lives in Annapolis. He works for the North Sails PRG group. Dave is a Category 3 professional.

John C. Millen - Pit

John has a vast amount of International Yacht Racing experience. He gained his international matchracing experience as a member of both the Canada I and Canada II campaigns. John brought home a bronze medal from the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the Flying Dutchman. He also represented Canada at Barcelona in 1992. In addition to innumerable 1st place finishes in championship regattas around the world, John also won the International 14 Worlds in 1979 and was onboard the World Championship 8 Metre in 1984. John grew up on the Toronto Islands with Terry. He is an R.C.Y.C. Junior Club Graduate and senior member since 1976. John is a Category 1 amateur.

Geoff Moore - Strategist

Geoff is best known for his J/24 prowess. He is two time North American Championship helmsman and holds numerous other J/24 Midwinters and East Coast titles. He finished 3rd at the 2002 J/24 Worlds. Geoff has also won the US Nations Cup for match racing. He was tactician aboard a 12 Metre for Cowes Week Jubilee in 2001. As a One Design Specialist, Geoff has been very successful in many other classes including J105's, Farr 40's, Mumm 30's, J35's Lightings, Etchells, Sonars, Stars and Lasers. He was a watch captain on the winning Farr 60 for the 2002 Miami to Baltimore race. He lives in Toronto with his wife Gillian and three daughters. Geoff has been a Sails Consultant with North Sails since 2000, before that he ran his own sail loft where he developed new sail designs. He is member of R.C.Y.C. and is a Category 3 professional.

Allan Megarry - Trimmer

The Team Defiant 2003 campaign is Allan's 6th Canada's Cup effort. With victories in 1978 with Evergreen, 1981 and 1984 onboard Coug, Allan is the only 3 time winner of the Cup. Allan represented Canada at the 1983 America's Cup in Newport with Canada I and the 1987 America's Cup in Australia on True North and Canada II. He has sailed numerous match race regattas with Terry that include, several York Cups and the Congressional Cup. Other regattas include, 8 Meter World Championships, SORC, Key West, Admirals Cup, Grundig Cup, Bermuda Race, Antigua Race Week and 12 Meter World Championships. Alan lives in Burlington and is a Category 1 amateur.

Phil Gow - Trimmer

Phil is a two time Olympian, sailing with Paul Thomson and Stu Flinn in the Soling in 1988 and 1992. He was on the Canadian Sailing team from 1984 to 1994. Phil has extensive international match racing experience. He was aboard Canada I for the 1983 Americas Cup and sailed in three 12 Metre Worlds from 1982 to 1986. He sailed on the International Match Racing Circuit from 1989 to 1992. Currently, he classifies himself a casual Finn sailor. He is one of Terry's regular York Cup crew. Phil is a Halifax native and is a member of both RCYC and RHSYS. Phil is a partner of CC&L Capital Markets in Toronto. He is a Category 1 amateur.

Rob Gale - Mast

Rob is a Halifax native. In 1987, Rob was the spinnaker trimmer on the first Canadian J/24 to win the Canadian Championships. He also placed 9th in the 1998 Etchells Worlds and 6th in the 2000 Etchell North Americans. In 2002, he placed 4th in the New England Etchell Championships. Again as spinnaker trimmer, Ron won (2nd overall) the IMS I class in the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race in 1999. He has extensive match racing experience winning 3 Polaris Cup Match Racing Regattas. Rob lives in Halifax and is a member of RNSYS. Rob is a Category 1 Amateur.

Ian Smith - Bowman

Ian was the floater/grinder in Team Defiant's 2001 successful Canada's Cup Challenge. Ian was part of Dave Ogden's J35, Buckeroo Banzai team from 1994 to 1997 and as such has two J/35 North American Championships and many other titles and placings on his sailing CV. Ian has been onboard for three of Terry's York Cup wins. He has also sailed in three 8 Metre World Championships, finishing 2nd twice. Ian is an R.C.Y.C. member and a Category 1 amateur.
