About
Union
Bowmansunion.com is a unique organization in the sailing community,
as unique as working on the bow of a racing sailboat. In the
past there have been countless books written and web sites
dedicated to boat building, sail trim, tactics, and navigation.
Bowmen have had no place to go to share information, talk
about techniques, or just feel welcome. It seems as though
the art of working on the foredeck of a sailboat has been
overlooked
That
is, until now
We
know what it takes to be a good bowman, and it is much more
than just strength and speed. Working on the bow also takes
courage, finesse, and instinct. Even the best bowmen make
mistakes, but what classifies them as the best is their ability
to fix those mistakes in the fastest, most efficient way,
without jeopardizing the safety of the crew or the integrity
of the boat. Sailboat racing is easy when everything goes
right, but nothing ever does. It has been said that a bowman
will never win a race for the boat, but they can easily loose
it. That may be true, but consider this. Without a good bowman
a raceboat will not move, it will not turn, and it will not
win. When I was younger a skipper once said to me "I
can race with bad trimmers and go around the course, not hurting
anyone, but I could NEVER race with a bad bowman."
Bowmansunion.com
welcomes all sailors. We know that most good sailors have
at one time or another been on the pointy end. This site will
focus on the importance of this position, and help to further
educate bowmen and sailors around the world.
The
separation in which bowmen live makes this position very unique
and sometimes alienating, some people think of bowmen as crazy
daredevils doing acrobatics on the front of the boat. The
truth is they have the same goal as the rest of the crew,
to win the race.
Bowmansunion.com
welcomes sailors of all ages and ability levels to utilize
this site and share in the knowledge that will further our
sport.
